TheKnow-Howse is a play-on-words, obtained combining know-how (the knowledge and skills required to do something correctly) and house, which stands for its educational objective of instructing its occupants to a more environment-aware lifestyle.
The Team is a multi-disciplinary group of students and instructors comprising the University ofSharjah (UOS) and the Research Centre Architettura>Energia of the University of Ferrara, Italy (UNIFE), andassisted by the consulting partners Sharjah Investment and Development authority (SHUROOQ) and SheikhZayed Housing Programme (SZHP).
Know-Howse aims at:
- Increasing environmental awareness rediscovering a new dimension of “living small but comfortably”, combining tradition and innovation, reinterpreting the cultural heritage of the traditional Emirati house
- Modernizing the UAE construction market introducing semi-prefabricated systems to rapidly, build affordable and environmental-friendly houses. The building materials combine characteristics of lightweight (easing construction), insulation (limiting energy losses and granting indoor comfort), and thermal mass (preventing sun overheating)

The Know-Howse‘s goal is to limit consumption by combining passive and active energy strategies. The intrinsic energy and environmental features (i.e. natural ventilation, passive cooling, etc.) and the components of the traditional Arab-house (i.e. Qa’ah, Barjeel, etc.) are enhanced in the Know-Howse, along with innovative renewable energy devices.
Interior flexibility allows for different house configuration and contributes differentiating environmental behaviors. However, building Automation plays a relevant role in managing the house, tackling its best energy performance, and communicates with the occupants educating them day after day.
“Know-Howse is not just an innovative project, it’s an educational program”
