The American University of Ras Al Khaimah envisions to develop the concept of bringing solar-powered, ultra-efficient and self-sufficient houses that respond to the region’s socio-cultural values, as well as climatic needs; using the traditional architectural elements that were used to overcome the climatic hardships in the past.TheSolar Decathlon Team hasover 60 faculties & students from diverse disciplines across the American University of Ras al Khaimah, including architecture Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science & Electrical, Electronics and Communication Engineers.

The project aims to blend the concept from UAE traditional houses with the new innovative solutionssuch as:

  • The concept of having courtyard
  • The orientation of the rooms and building
  • The use of insulation to compensate the thick walls
  • The use of wind towers to circulate the air
  • The use of skylights and modern daylighting techniques
  • The use of BIPV of shade, beautify and generate electricity
  • The use of PV on the roof, car shed to produce a surplus to the energy required by the house
  • Opening in the houses with the required sizes to control the heat transfer

The courtyard is the source of light and ventilation in the house, where all the living modules look at.The usable roof can perform a range of domestic functions. It is used to hang washed clothes and, for social gatherings. The traditional Arish made from the leaves of date palms have provided shelter from the extreme climate of the Arabian Peninsula for centuries. The technological pergola filters the environmental conditions in the house. It is a buffer space that establishes a sequence between exterior and interior.
